General Juan Garrido Library

The "General Juan Garrido Library" is the general research center for students and professors within the campus of the New Horizons Bilingual School, which supports the academic program, with a combination of different services and facilities.

All the students and members of the New Horizons' family have free access to the materials and databases of the library.

The library has two floors of information, that are divided into three different levels for reading activities, such as the Children's Section where you can find educational materials for students from Toddlers to Second Grade, the Primary section that provides books for Third to Eighth grade, and finally the High School section. The library also has an area designated for teachers, where there are computers with Internet services, teacher's editions of textbooks, miscellaneous materials, magazine articles, and any other appropriate materials such as activity books for science, math, and holidays.

The Library has a collection of over twenty-five thousand (25,000) books and over two hundred (200) periodicals, more than three hundred (300) posters, world maps and other visual educational content. In addition, it provides students and staff with a fully equipped Research and Digitalization area, where they can drag and drop to any media all the information found on the digital web services contracted by the library. The library provides bibliographic instructions to the students, so they may become independent learners. The library collection is catalogued by contents: history, science, literature, math, activities, reference books, and languages such as Spanish, English, and French.

The New Horizons' library receives many periodicals such as: current magazines (Time, US News, National Geographic, Business Week, The Economist, etc,), local and foreign newspapers (Listín Diario, Hoy, El Caribe, Scholastic Newspaper, Time for Kids, etc.) and research journals (Scientific American, Harvard Business Review, MIT's Technology Review, etc.).

The library is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Students from First to Twelfth Grade are able to use the library for reading and research during their normal classes if they are accompanied by the teacher of that class period and if the time has been requested by the teacher to the library coordinator.

There is always a staff willing to help the users and a librarian with more than nine (9) years of experience at New Horizons.

The library, as in any department of New Horizons, has its own rules. No student during his class period is able to enter the library without a teacher or a pass signed by an authority, so they cannot miss any class time. It is prohibited to enter the library in their Physical Education Uniform. To maintain order, food, drinks, purses, or bags are not permitted inside the library. A student can check out a maximum of five books a week, and is required to pay five (RD$5.00) Dominican pesos (US$0.30) per day if he returns the book after the due date.
